Coating technology and new developments in cemented carbide materials

According to different application requirements, the hardness of hardened steel is usually up to HRC 45 ~ 68. In order to smoothly cut the workpiece, the hardness of the cutting tool usually needs to be 3 to 5 times the hardness of the workpiece to be cut. The hardness of the coating is usually measured by Vickers hardness (Hv). Take Mitsubishi's products as an example. The hardness of the TiN coated end mill is Hv1900, and the hardness of the Mstar series end mill with (Al, Ti)N coating is Hv2800. The VC type end mill with (Al, Ti, Si)N coating has a hardness of Hv3200. The recently developed Impact Miracle nano-scale (Al, Ti)N coated VF end mill has a further hardness, reaching Hv3700. It can be said that it is close to the hardness value of PCBN. The oxidation initiation temperature and coating adhesion are further improved, and the friction coefficient is continuously decreased. When the HRC value is simply compared with the Hv value, the HRC68 is approximately equivalent to Hv940. Although the increase of each hardness value is nonlinearly related to the comparison, it can be seen that the (Al, Ti)N coated Mstar end mill can be hardened by cutting. Steel, Impact Tricle coated VF series end mills with higher hardness and oxidation start temperature for better machining results.

Cutting examples of Impact Miracle coated VF series end mills:

(1) Machining high-speed steel SKH51 (M2) mold (hardness HRC65) with VF-2SB R1 ball end mill, the cutting amount is: rotating speed 20000 rev / min, feed rate 6000mm / min, 0.15mm / tooth, back eat The amount of knife is 0.07mm, the amount of side knife is 0.2mm, and the air is cold. After the cutting length of 30m, the tool is still not damaged.

(2) Machining die steel SKDII (HRC60) with VF-MD φ6 right-angle end mill, the cutting amount is: speed 8000 rev / min, feed rate 2160 mm / min (0.045 mm / tooth), air-cooled. After the cutting length of 100m, the tool is still not damaged.

(3) Using VF-2SB R3 ball end mill to process hot-working die-casting mold (material is DH315, hardness HRC52), the cutting amount is: rotating speed 16000 rev / min, feed rate 1600mm / min, feed per tooth 0.05mm / tooth, back knife amount (cut depth) 2mm, side knife amount 0.2mm, down milling, air cooling. Despite the toughness of the material, the tool was damaged after more than 120 meters of cutting.

(4) Using the VF-2SB R1 ball end mill to cut the powder metallurgy high speed steel mold above HRC68, the cutting amount is: speed 8000 rev / min, feed rate 1260 mm / min, feed per tooth 0.08 mm / tooth, The back knife is 0.2mm, the side is 0.07mm when eating the knife, air-cooled, and down-milling. The cutting length can reach more than 50 meters, which is several times longer than the life of general end mills.

(5) Using the VF-2SB R10 ball end mill to process the die steel SKDII (HRC60), the cutting amount is: 1200 rev / min, feed rate 240mm / min, feed per tooth 0.1mm / tooth, eat back The amount of knives can be as high as 8mm, the amount of knives on the side is 0.5mm, and the milling is smooth and air-cooled. Under such conditions of deep cutting depth, it can still cut 30 meters, which is 3 times that of old products.

(6) Using the long neck VF-2XLB R1×20 ball end mill to process the deep groove of the mold, the material is SKDII (HRC60), the cutting amount is: speed 10000 rev / min, feed rate 1000mm / min, each tooth advances The amount is 0.05mm/tooth, air-cooled, and down-milling. Reciprocating cutting lengths of up to 20 meters, double the life of other similar products.
