Electric vehicle buyers often worry about battery longevity, unlike traditional car owners who rarely concern themselves with engine replacement. According to Xiao Chengwei, an expert from the National "863" Program's electric vehicle major project, battery capacity gradually decreases with repeated charging and discharging. Once it drops below 80% of its original capacity, it is no longer suitable for use in electric vehicles. A report by the German Solar and Hydrogen Energy Research Center highlights that while other components in electric vehicles typically last around 10 years, the battery life is generally shorter.
To address consumer concerns, automakers explain that battery life varies depending on usage conditions, such as driving habits and weather. For example, BYD’s iron batteries can maintain up to 70% of their initial capacity after 10,000 charge cycles. Even if charged twice daily, that equates to roughly 730 cycles per year, meaning the battery can still function well for over a decade. Lei Lin, head of Jianghuai’s vehicle performance testing, also mentioned that based on experiments, batteries can reliably last 100,000 kilometers over five years.
As more people switch to electric vehicles, understanding battery lifespan becomes increasingly important. While manufacturers provide warranties and testing data, real-world conditions may vary. However, with advancements in battery technology and improved maintenance practices, the concerns surrounding battery degradation are gradually being addressed. This makes electric vehicles a more viable and sustainable choice for the future.
