A unique hybrid energy tower combining solar and wind technologies is set to transform the energy landscape in St. Louis, Arizona.
Recently, Solarwind Energy Tower announced plans to construct a groundbreaking power generation tower that integrates both solar and wind energy. This innovative system uses sunlight, water, and natural wind gradients to generate clean, continuous electricity. Unlike traditional solar or wind farms, this tower can operate around the clock, offering a reliable energy source even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.
Located in a hot and arid region, the tower features a hollow cylindrical structure with an open top that allows hot, dry air to enter. A water-spraying system is installed nearby, drawing water from a pump and spraying it onto the top of the tower. As the water evaporates upon contact with the dry air, the surrounding air cools rapidly, increasing its density and creating a powerful downward airflow that can reach speeds up to 50 mph.
This strong vertical air flow is directed into multiple wind tunnels located at the base of the tower. Each tunnel houses a dedicated generator room equipped with large-scale turbine generators powered by a specialized drive system. Because the cooling effect from evaporation occurs regardless of weather conditions, the tower can produce electricity continuously throughout the year.
One of the key advantages of this system is that it generates its own internal wind currents using solar heat, making it ideal for areas with weak or inconsistent wind patterns. In regions with stronger winds, vertical guide vanes can be added to the tower’s surface to capture and direct more wind toward the turbines, maximizing energy output. These dual strategies help overcome the limitations of traditional solar and wind power, improving overall efficiency and reliability.
The project is expected to have an hourly capacity of 1,250 megawatt-hours. With a capacity factor of 0.6, the actual output would be around 750 MWh per hour. Approximately 18.5% of this energy will be used for internal operations, such as pumping water to the top of the tower. This leaves about 600 MWh available for sale to the grid. Although output may decrease slightly in winter due to lower temperatures, the annual average remains highly efficient.
According to a report by the Physicist Organization Network on May 5, this solar wind tower has become the first approved project in the U.S. to be built on a 600-acre site near St. Louis, Mexico. It is scheduled to begin operations by 2018, serving as a local public facility and substation. The city has committed to providing the necessary water supply through a long-term commercial contract lasting at least 50 years. (Hua Ling)
