Recently, the Shanxi Provincial Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision conducted a quality inspection on fertilizers and pesticides, revealing alarming results. The overall passing rate for agricultural products fell below 80%, raising concerns among farmers and industry experts alike.
The inspection covered 80 batches of fertilizers from cities such as Taiyuan, Jinzhong, Luliang, Linyi, Jincheng, and Yuncheng. Out of these, only 59 passed the tests, resulting in a pass rate of 73.75%. According to the report, the primary issue was the insufficient levels of main nutrients, followed by high chloride ion content and excessive moisture. One notable case involved the "Ruifeng Jiaji" phosphate and potassium fertilizer produced by Beijing Ruifeng Fengnong International Fertilizer Import & Export Co., Ltd. This product, marketed as a high-tech agricultural solution, had a stated total nutrient content of over 42%, but the actual measurement showed only 25.5%. Despite its premium packaging, it failed to meet basic agricultural standards, with very low active ingredients.
In addition to fertilizers, 80 pesticide samples were also tested, with 58 passing the inspection—giving a pass rate of 72.5%. The major problem found was the absence or insufficient levels of active ingredients. For example, a 40% chlorantrifos emulsifiable concentrate from BDH, produced by Jiangsu Xingbang Dahua Group Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., was found to have zero active ingredients. Similarly, a 50% carbendazim WP from the "Bio" brand, supposedly made by Anhui Shengda Bio-chemical Co., Ltd., also contained no active ingredient at all. These products, distributed through local cooperatives, are considered substandard and pose risks to both crops and consumers.
These findings highlight the urgent need for stricter quality control and better supervision in the agrochemical sector. Farmers are advised to be cautious when purchasing fertilizers and pesticides and to rely on certified suppliers.
