Recently, the Shanxi Provincial Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision released the results of a quality inspection on agricultural products such as fertilizers and pesticides. The findings revealed that the overall pass rate was below 80%, raising serious concerns about product quality in the region.
A total of 80 fertilizer samples were tested across cities including Taiyuan, Jinzhong, Luliang, Linyi, Jincheng, and Yuncheng. Out of these, only 59 batches met the required standards, resulting in a pass rate of 73.75%. The primary issues identified were insufficient main nutrient content, excessive chloride ion levels, and improper moisture content. One notable case involved the "Ruifeng Jiaji" phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, produced by Beijing Ruifeng Fengnong International Fertilizer Import & Export Co., Ltd. This product, marketed as a high-tech agricultural solution, was found to have a total nutrient content of over 42% on its label, but the actual measured value was only 25.5%. Despite its premium packaging, it failed to meet basic agricultural standards.
In addition to fertilizers, 80 pesticide samples were also inspected, with 58 passing the tests. This resulted in a pass rate of 72.5%. The most common issue was the absence or insufficient amount of active ingredients. For instance, a 40% chlorantrifos emulsifiable concentrate from BDH, manufactured by Jiangsu Xingbang Dahua Group Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., was found to contain zero active ingredient. Similarly, a 50% carbendazim wettable powder labeled as "Bio" and distributed by Shanxi Jinyu Seed Co., Ltd., had no detectable carbendazim. These products are clearly substandard and pose risks to farmers and crop health.
The findings highlight the urgent need for stricter quality control and more rigorous oversight in the agrochemical industry to ensure that farmers receive safe and effective products.
