The Process of Rusting in Braided Mesh Tubes
Braided mesh tubes, especially those made from carbon steel, are prone to rusting due to their interaction with oxygen in the air. When exposed to moisture and oxygen, the surface of the metal begins to oxidize, forming a thin layer of iron oxide. This oxide layer is not stable and continues to grow over time, eventually leading to the formation of visible rust and even holes in the material.
To prevent this, manufacturers often apply protective coatings such as paint, electroplating, or oxidation-resistant metals like zinc, nickel, or chromium. While these methods offer some protection, they are only effective as long as the coating remains intact. If the protective layer is scratched or damaged, the underlying metal becomes vulnerable to corrosion again.
Stainless steel braided mesh tubes, on the other hand, have a much higher resistance to rust due to the presence of chromium. When the chromium content reaches at least 10.5%, it significantly improves the material’s ability to resist atmospheric corrosion. Although increasing the chromium content further can enhance corrosion resistance, the improvement becomes less noticeable beyond a certain point.
This enhanced resistance is due to the formation of a thin, tightly adhered chromium-rich oxide layer on the surface. This passive film acts as a barrier, preventing further oxidation and protecting the underlying metal. Unlike other coatings, this layer is self-repairing. If the surface is damaged, the exposed steel reacts with oxygen in the air, and the passivation film reforms automatically, maintaining the protective properties of the stainless steel.

Whether in industrial, medical, or automotive applications, the self-healing nature of the chromium oxide layer ensures that the material remains strong and corrosion-free over time.
