USF Poly Solar Panel Design Gets New Progress

Recently, the University of South Florida Institute of Technology (USFPoly) has made new progress in solar panel technology.

After nearly a year of work, the design team completed the new design of the roof solar panels, and once again improved the efficiency of solar energy collection.

The surface of the newly designed solar panel adopts a series of V-shapes, enabling solar cells to collect sunlight throughout the day. The panel is made of a confidential material that can be incorporated into wall panels or roofing materials to increase the area that absorbs solar energy. Its solar energy utilization is 2% higher than other solar panels. The USF group has applied for this design patent.

Solar panels are usually made of crystalline silicon cells, but the materials used by USFPoly have better optical and physical properties than glass, which can increase the efficiency of energy absorption.

If the design can apply for a patent, the research team will have some patent rights. Brame, assistant professor and director of technology education at USFPoly, said that the prototype testability design is expected to be released by the end of January.

He acknowledged that there are many obstacles to the development of the design from a concept to a saleable product, that is, the erratic price of solar technology.

Brame said that establishing a prototype is very expensive, and his team is likely to complete the prototype through a partner or government grant. "If USFPoly is patentable, other companies and entities will be able to find ways to optimize the solution and put the panel into production at the appropriate cost." (Translation: Erin)
