Lockheed Martin begins production of the ATHENA laser weapon system

As a world-renowned military industrial company, Lockheed Martin announced this week that it will open the "ATHENA" laser weapon system in Bothell. ATHENA is the abbreviation of "Advanced Test High Energy Asset", which will become the core of the US 60 kW vehicle laser weapon system. ATHENA can be operated by a single person and consists of multiple fiber laser modules. Not only does it have the flexibility to avoid the entire system being stuck due to some minor faults.

In March of this year, the ATHENA laser weapon system was tested on a "bombardment" pickup truck. Even with only 30 kW of power, the system easily killed a truck.

Loma said that combining the different wavelength bands of the laser (Spectrum Beam Combining) can overcome the limitations of other fiber laser modules. Because its active gain medium is mainly made of some materials doped with rare earth elements, such as erbium, ytterbium and neodymium.

Loma said that the modular design means that the laser energy can be freely selected according to the needs of specific tasks (full power up to 120kW), and the use of off-the-shelf commercial fiber laser components can further reduce costs.

Thanks to the flexibility of the fiber, ATHENA can achieve greater gain by deploying tens of thousands of meters of fiber, while occupying very little space because it can be coiled like a rope.

Fiber lasers are extremely durable and can be used with 50% power to achieve a high-energy beam equivalent to solid-state lasers. In addition, a larger "surface-to-volume" ratio means that the system is easier to cool.
