Geely Group’s insiders told the “First Financial Daily” reporter that the investment will be carried out in two steps. Within three years after the initial investment, Geely Group will purchase the equity of Carbon Recycling International, become the latter’s shareholder, and station Member of the board.

$45.5 million bet on the future of methanol energy

According to the reporter, the above-mentioned carbon recycling international company was established in 2006, is headquartered in Reykjavik, Iceland, and has a factory in Swatsenji near Grindavik. This is a company dedicated to the research and development and production of renewable energy. According to public information, the company now has the technology of converting renewable energy and circulating carbon dioxide emissions into methanol, providing green and clean energy for automobiles and ships.

Compared with the traditional automobile, methanol has high octane number and good anti-vibration; it has oxygen and combustion heat efficiency. By increasing the compression ratio, the power and torque of the engine can be greatly increased, which is 10% higher than that of the same type of gasoline engine.

At the same time, due to the high oxygen content of methanol, it can fully burn, and the use of methanol in automobiles can increase the octane number of the fuel and make the combustion in the cylinder more complete. Therefore, the carbon oxides and nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas of methanol vehicles Contaminants such as objects and respirable particulate matter are significantly reduced compared to conventional vehicles.

Not only that, because the main components of methanol fuel are carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, the post-combustion emissions are carbon dioxide and water, which can be recycled. Therefore, the energy recycling rate of methanol vehicles will be higher than other new energy vehicle products. Compared with traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles, methanol vehicles also have significant economic advantages.

"We believe that methanol as a clean energy source will have a lot of room for development in the future." Geely Group insiders told reporters. Perhaps because of this, Geely Automobile has started research and development of methanol vehicles since 2005, and it is one of the few domestic passenger vehicle companies to pilot and promote methanol vehicles. At present, Geely Seaview SC7 methanol sedan has been promoted and demonstrated in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Shanghai and Guiyang.

It is understood that the first batch of 150 Geely Seascape methanol vehicles put into operation in Shanxi Jinzhong has a total operation of 5.8 million kilometers per year, the maximum bicycle operating mileage is 90,000 kilometers, and the total use of methanol fuel is 700,000 liters, with an average alcohol consumption of 15.3 liters per 100 kilometers. The average fuel cost per kilometer is 0.39 yuan. The fuel cost of the same-displacement gasoline vehicle is about 75 yuan per 100 kilometers, and the methanol vehicle energy saving is 48%.

Commercialization is far away

Since methanol as a fuel has two major benefits of environmental protection, energy conservation and cost savings, why is methanol vehicles not fully promoted in China, but only for the pilot phase?

First of all, it stems from technical issues. According to the reporter's understanding, before this, Shanghai had placed M100 methanol vehicles in small batches in the taxi field in Shanghai. However, the situation of the pilot is still different from what was expected. Ma Jing, deputy director of the Shanghai Economic and Information Committee, said in an interview with the media: "The advantage of (methanol vehicles) compared with traditional gasoline vehicles is not obvious. Especially for high-load operation, the overall condition of methanol vehicles is not as good as the former." At the same time, due to the strong corrosive nature of methanol, methanol vehicles in several pilot cities have experienced problems such as methanol injector blockage and engine corrosion.

At the same time, like new energy vehicles, the promotion of methanol vehicles is also facing a shortage of fuel-filled infrastructure. The difference is that since the policy does not have subsidies and support similar to new energy for methanol vehicles, the popularity of methanol fueling stations will inevitably lag behind new energy charging piles.

Third, the country has not yet developed a comprehensive standard for methanol vehicles and methanol fuels. Therefore, it is not conducive to the healthy development of the entire industry.

However, even so, Li Shufu is still making big acquisitions, gambled on the future of methanol fuel. From the reality, with the support of the country for energy-saving emission reduction and new energy, from the central to the local, there is a preliminary consensus on methanol as a future alternative fuel for vehicles.

In the second half of last year, a methanol vehicle pilot work symposium was held in Shanxi. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that the phased test data of the methanol vehicle pilot showed that methanol as a vehicle alternative fuel has no major obstacles in technology. And said that the next step methanol car will accelerate the promotion. As a confirmation, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has included Guiyang in the national methanol vehicle pilot city camp, and expanded the pilot application city of methanol vehicles to “four provinces and one city”.

In the "Industrial Energy Conservation and Comprehensive Utilization Work Points 2015" released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on March 4 this year, it further mentioned the deepening of the methanol vehicle pilot, the promotion of the methanol vehicle model announcement, the strengthening of the methanol vehicle standard system, and the development of methanol vehicle filling. However, although the national macro is inclined to this policy, how long does it take for methanol vehicles to move from the pilot to the market? It is currently inconclusive.
