Inside Tieghan Gerard’s Half Baked Harvest Studio Barn Kitchen

Tieghan Gerard is a renowned cookbook author and the creator behind the popular food blog, Half Baked Harvest. Originally from Colorado, Tieghan transformed her passion into a thriving career by founding HBH Studio Barn, a space where she experiments with recipes and captures her culinary creations for her blog and her 2 million-plus followers on Instagram. She recently shared her journey of building the ideal studio kitchen, offering practical advice and insights into what makes a professional cooking space truly exceptional. "I'd love to tell you a bit about myself and how Half Baked Harvest came to be," Tieghan began warmly. "My mom and I launched the blog back in 2012 when I was finishing high school. I’d also just graduated with an associate's degree, and we thought, why not give it a shot? At the time, we weren't expecting much—just a little something for fun. Fast forward eight years, and here we are today, with millions of readers following along." Tieghan comes from a large family of seven siblings, and her love for cooking began as a way to bring some order to the chaos of their household. "I started cooking for everyone when I was younger—it was my way of trying to keep things calm. Though it didn’t quite tame the chaos, it sparked a lifelong passion for food." The transformation of an old horse barn into the Half Baked Harvest studio space was no small feat. "Renovating the barn took roughly a year, and I worked and lived there for about two years before needing more space. That’s when we decided to build the new HBH Studio Barn, which took over two years to complete. Today, I live in the smaller barn and work exclusively in the new studio." One of the standout features of the kitchen is the enormous island. "Having a big island gives me so much flexibility when working. I even have a prep sink at one end of the island and a larger main sink across from it. Having dual sinks is essential—it saves so much time!" When asked about the challenges in designing the perfect studio kitchen, Tieghan reflected on the difficulties. "The hardest part was dealing with contractors and working with local authorities. Finding skilled professionals was tough, and navigating regulations proved challenging. After completing the build, we realized a few things needed tweaking—like adding better track lighting and extra outlets. We also installed a sink in the pantry." For the kitchen fixtures, Tieghan chose Waterstone’s Traditional Positive Lock Pulldown (PLP) faucets for the main kitchen and Annapolis faucets for the pantry and bathroom. "Our design team introduced us to Waterstone, and we instantly fell in love. The faucets are not only stunning but incredibly functional. Plus, they're made in the U.S. with top-notch materials. We selected the Classic Bronze finish for the main kitchen, giving it a timeless yet modern look. In the pantry, we opted for the Annapolis Faucet in Black Nickel, and we installed three Annapolis Bar faucets in brass in the downstairs bathroom. Their old-world charm fits perfectly with the aesthetic." Quality in kitchen fixtures is non-negotiable for Tieghan, especially given her high usage. "A good faucet is critical. I’m constantly using them throughout the day, and the sheer volume of dishes we wash is immense. Even with help, it can take up to two hours daily to clean everything." For those embarking on their own kitchen renovations, Tieghan emphasized the importance of quality and forethought. "Investing in durable products is key. Replacing items frequently becomes expensive. Lighting and electricity plans require careful consideration too. It pays off to consult with experts on these aspects. Essentials like faucets, lighting, and appliances can make or break a functional kitchen." Reflecting on her experiences, Tieghan offered a final piece of wisdom: "Even after two kitchen projects, I still learned lessons along the way. Focus on quality, work with professionals where possible, and don’t rush the planning phase. These spaces are meant to last."
