**Abstract**
China’s Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for June, released on the 1st, showed a reading of 51%, marking an increase of 0.2 percentage points from May and continuing a four-month upward trend. This sustained growth in PMI indicates that China’s manufacturing sector is maintaining a steady and positive momentum.
Zhao Qinghe, a senior statistician at the National Bureau of Statistics’ Service Industry Research Center, noted that the continued rise in PMI reflects the ongoing strength of China’s manufacturing industry. Zhang Liqun, a researcher at the State Council’s Development Research Center, added that the economy is showing signs of solid growth, with stability becoming more evident.
According to a report by the China Logistics Information Center, the PMI has rebounded for four consecutive months, especially in the last two months, which highlights the effectiveness of policy measures aimed at stabilizing economic growth. Experts suggest that the government’s targeted support for the real economy has helped improve demand-side conditions, leading to a general recovery in key sub-indices like new orders.
In June, the new orders index rose to 52.8%, the highest level since October of the previous year, while the production index increased slightly to 53%. These figures indicate strong industrial activity and stability in the manufacturing sector.
Cai Jin, vice president of the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, pointed out that the gap between the production and new orders indices was the smallest this year, suggesting improved coordination between supply and demand, as well as greater stability in the overall economy.
The new export orders index reached 50.3% in June, up 1 percentage point from the previous month, the highest level since December last year. Zhao Qinghe attributed this improvement to better economic performance in China’s major trading partners, such as the U.S., Europe, and Japan, as well as the country’s efforts to promote trade facilitation and support foreign trade.
Despite these positive signals, some data still indicate downward pressure on the economy. Zhao Qinghe highlighted that the PMI increase was not evenly distributed. The import index remained below the critical threshold at 49.2%, and the employment index stood at 48.6%, still below the 50-point mark. Small businesses, in particular, continue to face challenges, with their employment index at 48.3%.
Cai Jin emphasized that although the small business PMI stabilized in June, it remains low and continues to be below the critical point. He called for increased support for small enterprises through policy reforms to create a better business environment.
According to the China Logistics Information Center, July typically sees a slowdown due to high temperatures and rainy weather. Many companies reported that they expect a decline in activity during this period. Therefore, the government should maintain targeted regulatory measures and micro-level stimulus policies to counteract seasonal effects and keep the macroeconomic environment stable.
