Jilin Youth Plays with Falling Rope Breaks and Dies

A few days ago, a 24-year-old man from Jilin City was tragically killed after falling from the Lancang Bridge in Beishan Park. According to witnesses, the man had been engaging in an extreme activity by fast-roping down the bridge. The rope he used suddenly snapped, causing him to plummet to the ground below. The incident took place near the bridge, where a sign indicated that the structure is 15.7 meters high. Emergency responders arrived quickly and rushed the man to the Third People’s Hospital of Jilin City for treatment, but he later succumbed to his injuries. Police are currently investigating the cause of the accident and have taken the broken rope as evidence. Mr. Shao, one of the eyewitnesses, was clearing snow nearby when he saw the man and a girl approach the bridge. “The man tied one end of the rope to the guardrail on the western side of the bridge and the other end around himself. He also secured his seatbelt before crossing the railing,” he explained. “As he was hanging and moving down, the rope suddenly broke, and he fell heavily onto the ground.” Mr. Shao ran over and saw the man lying on the ground with a green rope about the size of a thumb on the pavement. Paramedics then carried the injured man down the hill and transported him to the hospital. It has since been confirmed that the victim is a man surnamed Zhang, who was 24 years old at the time of the incident. Another witness, Mr. Jiang Chengmin, was filming the event when the man disappeared from the camera frame. “I was recording the man going down the rope, but all of a sudden, I lost sight of him. When I looked again, he had fallen to the ground,” he said. Mr. Yan, another eyewitness, described how the man was accompanied by a girl wearing yellow clothes. “He crossed the bridge railing, said ‘Ready,’ and then started descending. I was curious, so I switched my camera to continuous shooting mode and focused on him,” he recalled. “After he fell, I ran over and saw that he had a backpack on, wore a white safety belt, and was only using one rope to descend.” Mr. Yan added that the girl in yellow immediately ran down to call for help, while others assisted in removing the man’s backpack and contacting the police. “The man was severely injured and didn’t seem to be responding well,” he said. By 3 p.m. yesterday, the reporter arrived at the hospital and confirmed that the man had died despite emergency efforts. The police have now launched an investigation, and the exact cause of death will be determined through further examination. This tragic incident has raised concerns about the safety of such activities in public spaces. Authorities are urging people to avoid engaging in risky behaviors without proper equipment or supervision.
