A few days ago, Bulgaria raised a safety alert against a Chinese manufacturer of arm floats through the European Commission’s non-food rapid alert system. The concern was that the product could pose a drowning risk to users. The issue stemmed from the fact that while the floats were labeled with English warnings, the instructions and safety information were not provided in Bulgarian, violating both the EU Personal Protective Equipment Directive and the EN13138-1 standard.
As China's foreign trade continues to grow, export companies have become increasingly aware of product safety requirements. Most now ensure that warnings and usage instructions are clearly marked on personal protective equipment. However, many still rely on English as the default language for warnings, neglecting the official language of the importing country. This oversight can lead to serious consequences, such as product bans, market withdrawals, or recalls—issues that companies must take seriously.
To avoid such problems, the inspection and quarantine authorities urge exporters to take the following steps: First, enhance communication and thoroughly research the specific requirements of the importing country before exporting. Ensure that all warning labels and user instructions are in the local language. Second, implement a categorized management approach based on the target market, conducting targeted testing to guarantee product compliance and safety. Finally, pay close attention to detail—every small aspect of the product can impact its acceptance and success in foreign markets. It is essential to maintain high-quality standards at every stage of production and packaging.
