Watermelons grow rapidly and have a high water content, making them highly sensitive to various chemical agents. If the concentration of the applied chemicals is too high or the wrong product is used, it can easily lead to phytotoxicity, which harms the plant's health. Here are some effective measures to address phytotoxicity in watermelon plants:
First, immediately flush the affected areas with water. Use a sprayer to thoroughly rinse the stems and leaves, removing any chemical residues that may be causing harm. Make sure the water pressure is strong enough and use a large volume of water to maximize the washing effect.
Second, if the phytotoxicity has already occurred or the chemical was not suitable, apply a diluted solution of potassium permanganate—around 5000 to 7000 times dilution—to help neutralize the toxic effects.
Third, avoid using additional chemical pesticides, especially those similar to the one that caused the toxicity. This helps prevent further damage and allows the plant to recover more effectively.
Fourth, improve overall management after the incident. Apply quick-acting fertilizers along with watering to support the plant’s recovery. Loosen the soil around the roots to enhance aeration and nutrient absorption. You can also combine root feeding with foliar sprays of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to boost the plant’s nutritional status and strengthen its ability to absorb nutrients.
For example, mix 1 kg of high-quality superphosphate with 40–40 liters of water, let it soak for a day and night, then spray the solution on the stems and leaves. This method helps restore the plant’s health and promotes normal growth.
By following these steps, you can significantly reduce the impact of phytotoxicity and help your watermelon plants recover quickly.
