Five ways to increase the rate of watermelon sitting

To ensure the watermelon crop thrives, it's important to adapt planting schedules based on local weather conditions. By adjusting the sowing time—either earlier or later—farmers can avoid the rainy season, which helps in better pollination and fertilization, ultimately increasing fruit set rates. Artificial pollination is another effective technique. During the flowering period, especially on sunny mornings, male flowers can be used to manually pollinate the second and third female flowers. This involves gently applying the anthers from male flowers onto the stigma of the female ones. On rainy days, covering the female flowers with small plastic tubes or paper bags before artificial pollination can help protect them from rain. Studies show that this method can increase fruit set by over 10% compared to natural pollination on windless days, and even more so during rainy periods. When the watermelon plants have 4 to 5 true leaves and show no signs of creeping growth, it’s time to perform root pruning. Carefully cut the roots about 13 cm away from the main stem, being careful not to damage the primary root. The goal is to break up the soil slightly without turning it over. This practice helps control vegetative growth, prevents elongated stems, and encourages a strong root system, which supports better flowering and fruiting. Another technique is known as "root watering" or "root lifting." When the second or third female flowers appear, two wooden strips about 17 cm long are heated in oil and placed around the base of the plant. These strips are positioned so that the roots are flat but not compressed. Over time, this creates a stable support structure, helping the watermelons grow larger and remain firmly in place. Lastly, gently squeezing the stems behind the young melons can also promote better fruit set. By applying pressure until you hear a soft "snap," you encourage the young fruits to settle securely, preventing them from falling off. This method follows the saying, “After the head, sitting in front of me,” highlighting how proper care leads to successful fruit development. By implementing these practices, farmers can significantly improve their watermelon yield and quality, ensuring healthier and more productive crops.
