The first solar waste treatment station in Ninghai will be put into use in February

Recently, the first solar-powered waste treatment station in Qiantong Town, Ninghai County, is set to be completed and officially launched in February. This facility aims to process the daily household waste generated in Lianghuang Village, promoting waste reduction, environmental protection, and resource recycling. The introduction of this innovative system marks a significant step forward in rural waste management.

Since the implementation of rural household garbage collection and treatment programs, the model of “household sorting, group cleaning, village collection, and town disposal” has been widely adopted across Qiantong’s villages. However, due to the remote location and difficult access, the garbage from nearly 100 households in Lianghuangshan, along with the waste produced by thousands of tourists visiting the area, has traditionally been handled on-site. This method, while practical, has raised concerns about environmental impact and long-term sustainability.

According to local officials, there are two natural villages—Liaochuang and Xishanli—within Lianghuangshan, home to over 250 permanent residents. The Lianghuang Scenic Area attracts a large number of visitors, often reaching into the thousands each day. Burning or landfilling waste in such a sensitive ecological zone could lead to pollution and damage the local environment, which is why the town decided to take a more sustainable approach.

In October last year, Qiantong Town selected a site for the construction of the first solar waste treatment station in Lianghuangshan. This facility uses solar energy to power the biological treatment of organic waste, reducing the need for traditional disposal methods. The technology not only helps in minimizing environmental harm but also promotes circular economy principles by converting waste into useful resources.

The system is expected to turn around 60% of household waste into mature compost, which can be used as nutrient-rich fertilizer for farmland and orchards. For non-recyclable waste, it will be transported to a designated landfill site. Once fully operational, the Lianghuangcun Solar Waste Disposal Station is anticipated to process approximately 80 kilograms of organic waste per day. This will significantly reduce the amount of waste that needs to be transported or burned, leading to cleaner air, better sanitation, and a healthier living environment for both residents and visitors.

This initiative not only addresses the immediate waste management challenges faced by the village but also sets an example for other rural areas looking to adopt eco-friendly and sustainable practices. By leveraging renewable energy and smart waste processing, Qiantong Town is paving the way for a greener future in the countryside.
