HC Plastics News: At the 2017 German Plastics Processing Exhibition, nylon and other engineering plastics manufacturers became the focus.
DSM launched
ForTiiAce
For the exhibition, ForTii is the main product of Royal DSM. The Dutch material manufacturer exhibited a high-performance nylon resin called ForTiiAce for water management. This material was introduced at K2016 and was developed for drinking water applications.
“The world’s water consumption is increasing,†said European Business Director Joostd’Hooghe. “The new level of ForTii complements our product portfolio in water treatment.â€
DSM executives said that ForTiiAce contains 30% glass fiber, which has been shown to maintain better performance in long-term contact with water.
According to Tim Vorage, its automotive project manager, ForTii is also resistant to high temperatures and chemicals. ForTiiAce has also been commercialized for use in a component of a weeding machine.
DSM employs 25,000 people worldwide and has annual sales of around 10 billion euros ($11.8 billion).
Austrian Shengde expands production capacity
Austin High Performance Materials Co., Ltd. executives said the Houston-based company plans to increase the production capacity of a variety of products, including nylon 6/6 resin and modified materials. Scott Rook, vice president of commercial operations for the company's nylon business, said that Oswald will first increase its adiponitrile capacity at its Decatur plant in Alabama.
Rook declined to disclose the details of the expansion, but he said the project will create new jobs and will "meet the needs of Austrian." He estimates that the global nylon 6/6 market is expected to require approximately 385 million pounds of adiponitrile per year over the next five years.

In the next 2-3 years, Ao Shengde will also increase the production capacity of nylon 6/6 resin and modified materials, as well as the production capacity of hexamethylenediamine (HDM) and adipic acid raw materials. The company expects its demand for nylon resin and modified materials in the automotive and other markets to grow to double digits.
Rook said: "We are expanding production capacity to support the growth of the industry." Ao Shengde manufactures nylon 6/6 resin in Pensacola, Florida and Greenwood, South Carolina, in Pensacola and Alabama Manufacturing modified materials.
At last year's German Plastics Processing Exhibition, Ao Shengde launched a new grade of high-performance resin - Vydyne brand nylon 6 / 6, the target application market is less concerned about home appliances, must be washers and dryers. The company's executives say the new grade of resin will make electrical connectors for these appliances safer.
Aoshengde has 3,000 employees worldwide. In 2009, SK Capital Partners, a private equity firm based in New York, acquired the comprehensive nylon business of Nordson in the United States. Since then, Austrian has become its subsidiary.
Solvay new grade specialty resin
Brussels-based Solvay has introduced a new class of specialty resins and a new composites line in Mexico. At the German Plastics Processing Exhibition last year, the company exhibited two lxef brand polyarylamide (PARA) resins.
The first new grade of lxef is a carbon and glass reinforced resin that is very rigid. TomWood, the company's vice president of specialty polymers, said the resin is popular in high-end automotive parts and digital cameras.
The other is a 50% glass fiber reinforced material that can be colored orange for signal applications such as high voltage areas in electric vehicles. Wood says that this material is easy to color.
For automotive applications, Solvay also added thermal management properties to its Ryton brand polyphenylene sulfide and Amodell brand polyphthalamide.
“The demand for our materials in the automotive industry is growing, as suppliers are looking for materials that are more resistant to higher temperatures, lighter weight and better performance,†Wood said.
He added that since the acquisition of Chevron Phillips Chemical's related business in 2014, Solvay produced Ryton brand polyphenylene sulfide in Borger, Texas.
Solvay manufactures a modified material based on Technyl nylon resin in a new compound line in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The line was launched in July last year and is located near a factory in Chunil Engineering with an annual production capacity of around 22 million pounds. Chunil Engineering is a long-term customer of Solvay in the automotive industry.
Recently, Solvay sold the nylon business to BASF.
Dow DuPont and Nylon 6/6
Dow DuPont executives said that the high heat-resistant nylon 6/6 resin is giving the company deeper access to the automotive market. Klaus Bender, head of automotive marketing, said that this type of resin is sold under the brand name Zytel and has recently been used in engine mounts to replace die-cast aluminum and reduce noise.
Zytel has also recently been used in engine cylinder covers. “More and more compact engines require different materials,†explains Bender.
DuPont merged with Dow in August last year to form Dow DuPont, becoming a global leader in the plastics and chemicals industry with 2016 sales of $72 billion. Dow DuPont plans to split into three separate listed companies within 18 months.
