As a member of the packaging department at Aoma Furniture Factory, 18-year-old Liu Qiang starts his day at 8 o'clock in the morning. Compared to the high-tech and complex tasks in other departments, the packaging area demands more attention to detail and smooth operation. Although Liu Qiang may not be as skilled as the older workers, he learns quickly and can usually finish his daily tasks within regular working hours, even when dealing with complicated packaging jobs. However, there are times when orders pile up, forcing him to work overtime until 9:30 PM. “If I can’t finish, I just keep working,†he said casually.
Luckily for Liu Qiang, he had a relatively easy day today. The tasks assigned to him involved small parts, which were perfect for someone like him who is already used to handling light items. While working, he occasionally muttered, “I want to get it done, but I can’t take shortcuts.†By noon, he had already completed more than half of the job. After lunch, he took a short nap. When the shift ended, he proudly announced, “I finished nearly 500 packages today!â€
At 18, Liu Qiang is caught between curiosity and confusion. He loves watching science fiction and action movies, and while he's stepping into adulthood, he still feels lost. “Even though I'm the youngest here, I don’t feel different from the others. I just don’t know why. We rarely hang out or talk much.†In his free time, he reads books and writes in a diary to pass the time. When he’s in a good mood, he listens to soft music; when he’s down, he turns to rock. He doesn’t play games or scroll through his phone. “Since I came to Shenzhen, I’ve changed a lot. I didn’t use to like talking to people or reading. There are so many things I don’t understand. In this fast-paced city, I feel a lot.†He smiled and added, “But I do like Shenzhen.â€
