As a member of the packaging department at Aoma Furniture Factory, 18-year-old Liu Qiang starts his day at 8 a.m. Compared to other production departments that require high technical skills and precision, the packaging team demands a lot of attention to detail and operational efficiency. Although Liu Qiang may not be as fast as the more experienced workers, he learns quickly and can usually finish his daily tasks within regular working hours, even when dealing with complex packaging jobs. That said, there are days when the workload is so heavy that he ends up working overtime until 9:30 p.m. “If I can’t finish on time, I just keep working,†he says casually.
Luckily for Liu Qiang, today’s workload was relatively manageable. He was assigned packages filled with small parts, which suited his experience with lighter tasks. While he wasn’t entirely satisfied with the pace, he muttered to himself, “I want to finish, but I can’t take shortcuts.†By lunchtime, he had already completed more than half of his work. After eating, he took a quick nap. At the end of the night, he proudly announced, “I finished nearly 500 packages today!â€
At 18, Liu Qiang is in a phase of life full of curiosity and uncertainty. A fan of science fiction and action movies, he's stepping into the adult world, yet he still feels lost sometimes. “Even though I’m the youngest in the factory, I don’t feel any different from the others. I just don’t know why. We rarely hang out together or talk much.†In his free time, he tries to pass the time by reading books and keeping a diary. When he's in a good mood, he listens to soft music; when he's down, he turns to rock. He doesn’t play games or use his phone much. “Since coming to Shenzhen, I’ve changed a lot. I used to avoid people and didn’t like reading. There were a lot of problems. In such a fast-paced city, I feel overwhelmed.†He adds with a smile, “But I do like Shenzhen.â€

“—If I could do it all over again, I’d like to start a small business and live a stable, comfortable life.â€
