(Reporter Zhang Zhao) "Women's ovarian function begins to decline before aging, leading to menopause. Nowadays, an increasing number of young women are experiencing infertility due to ovulation disorders or even premature ovarian failure." In recent years, the incidence of infertility caused by ovulation issues has been on the rise. Protecting your ovaries through lifestyle choices is essential, and one important step is avoiding plastic tableware.
Infertility Caused by Ovulation Disorders
An Increasing Number of Patients
In an interview with the General Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, it was revealed that the number of women visiting the reproductive center has increased sevenfold over eight years. From about 30 patients per day when the center first opened in 2005, it now sees over 200 daily consultations. Among these patients, more and more are struggling with infertility due to ovulation problems.
Director Song Xueru of the center explained that the ovaries are a vital organ for women. On one hand, they produce sex hormones that maintain hormonal balance, affecting everything from skin health to fertility and overall well-being. On the other hand, the ovaries release eggs regularly, which is essential for pregnancy.
Under normal conditions, women of childbearing age release one egg each month, forming the basis for conception. However, many women coming to the center are experiencing irregular or absent ovulation due to factors like obesity or endocrine imbalances. "Some female patients may only release one egg every two or three months, or even every six months. No ovulation significantly reduces the chances of getting pregnant," said Director Song.
Amenorrhea Before Age 40
Premature Ovarian Failure
Among those suffering from ovulation-related infertility, some experience premature ovarian failure. According to Director Song, women typically start to see a decline in ovarian function between the ages of 45 and 55. If this decline occurs before age 40, it can lead to amenorrhea and atrophy of the reproductive organs, known medically as premature ovarian failure. The phrase “a 30-year-old woman with a 50-year-old ovary†is often seen in ads, but this is becoming a reality for many young women.
Although the exact cause of premature ovarian failure remains unclear, it is linked to genetic factors, autoimmune diseases, infections, surgeries, chemotherapy, stress, and smoking. Special attention should be given to infections and mental stress. For example, the mumps virus can affect both male and female reproductive systems, but girls are less likely to notice the impact. If a girl develops oophoritis after mumps, it might go unnoticed, yet it can damage the ovaries and lead to early failure. Additionally, emotional stress, long-term anxiety, and irregular sleep patterns also contribute to the condition, though many urban women overlook these risks.
Ovarian Maintenance at Beauty Salons Is Not Reliable
Focus on Daily Life Details Is Key
If the ovaries are damaged, fertility is the first issue affected. Once the ovaries begin to age prematurely, reversing the damage is extremely difficult. Director Song emphasized that there is no scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of "ovarian maintenance" treatments offered at beauty salons. Instead, the focus should be on managing symptoms and paying attention to everyday habits. For instance, women should avoid using emergency contraception frequently, as it can disrupt the natural hormone balance. They should also eat healthier, reducing intake of fried foods and processed items. Most importantly, they should avoid plastic tableware.
A recent study found that substances like phthalates in plastics not only harm men’s reproductive health but also negatively affect ovarian function. "Those responsible for household shopping should pay closer attention. It’s best to buy less plastic wrap and use glass containers instead of plastic ones. When buying breakfast, bring your own utensils and avoid using plastic bags, especially when heating food," said Director Song.
