In the middle of summer, an anti-season promotion for home textiles sparked a surge in what is typically considered an "off-season" market. Attractive prices and stylish designs have drawn many consumers to shop online for bedding during this time. However, a common question remains: should new bedding be washed before first use? Some people believe that bedding comes into direct contact with the skin and may carry dust or even bacteria due to handling during production and transport. Others, however, worry that washing might cause fading or reduce the softness of the fabric, making it less appealing than when it was new.
To explore this issue further, a reporter from China Textile Network conducted some research. Miss Yang, an administrative worker, always washes her new bedding before using it. She is concerned not only about allergies but also about unseen impurities. While she doesn’t mind wrinkles, she prefers cleanliness over appearance. On the other hand, Miss Shao, who is preparing for her wedding, values perfection. The bedding used on her wedding day will be seen by many guests, so she wants it to look brand new. Ms. Zhang, a mother, prefers to use new bedding on her wedding night as per tradition. Even if she washes it later, she keeps a fresh set ready for the night.
Most bedding products on the market are made of cotton, which tends to wrinkle after washing. The manufacturing process usually includes steps like fabric inspection, cutting, sewing, finishing, ironing, packaging, and storage. Some brands use vacuum packaging or antibacterial treatments. According to customer service representatives from top-selling Taobao bedding shops, it's recommended to wash new bedding before use—using cold water and then flattening it to dry. For wedding bedding, it's advised to follow the care instructions and iron it to restore its original look.
Although many textile factories require workers to wear shoe covers, the production process can only ensure that there are no visible stains. Industry experts recommend rinsing new bedding with water (not exceeding 30°C) to remove any residual chemicals and soften the fabric. Avoid drying it in a dryer; instead, hang it to dry and smooth it out while still damp. For those seeking perfection, a light iron (with a soleplate temperature not exceeding 110°C) can help restore the fabric’s original texture.
Bedding is a daily necessity, and many people prefer machine washing. However, if not dried properly, it can become wrinkled and lose its fresh appearance. So why don’t manufacturers offer bedding that’s ready to use right out of the package? If washing is necessary, it would make sense for companies to provide clear care instructions. Why not clean and prepare the bedding professionally before it leaves the factory? Perhaps there’s a way to create “non-iron†bedding, similar to non-iron shirts, that requires minimal effort to maintain its appearance. (Reported by Zhang Weifen, China Textile Network)
