In the middle of summer, an off-season promotion for home textile products sparked a surge in what is typically considered an "off-peak" market. Attractive prices and stylish designs attracted many consumers to join the anti-season shopping trend on Taobao. However, a common question remains: should new bedding be washed before first use?
Some consumers believe that bedding comes into direct contact with the skin and may carry dust or bacteria from the production and distribution process. Others worry that washing it might cause fading or reduce its softness, affecting its appearance. This debate has led to different practices among users.
To explore this issue further, China Textile Network reporter spoke with several individuals. Miss Yang, an administrative worker, always washes her new bedding before using it. She’s concerned about both skin allergies and unseen impurities. She doesn’t mind wrinkles, as she keeps the bedding stored away until needed. In contrast, Miss Shao, who is preparing for her wedding, values aesthetics. The wedding bedding will be seen by many guests, so she wants it to look perfect on the big day. Ms. Zhang, a mother, prefers to use the bedding directly but replaces it with a fresh set at night, following traditional customs.
Currently, most bedding on the market is made of cotton, which tends to wrinkle after washing. The production process usually includes steps like fabric purchase, inspection, cutting, sewing, finishing, ironing, packaging, and storage. Some brands use vacuum packaging or sterilization methods. According to customer service representatives from top-selling Taobao bedding brands, it's recommended to rinse new bedding with cold water before first use and then air dry it flat. For wedding bedding, it's also advised to clean it before use. While some choose to use it directly or wash it, ironing is necessary to restore its new look.
Despite strict hygiene measures in production facilities, such as requiring employees to remove shoes, the final product may still have minor residues. Industry experts suggest rinsing new bedding with water (maximum 30°C) to remove surface chemicals and dyes. This makes it softer and less likely to fade later. Avoid drying it in a dryer; instead, hang it to dry and smooth it out while damp. For those seeking perfection, a light iron (not exceeding 110°C) can help restore its original look.
Although many home textile brands emphasize cleanliness during production, there’s still a need for consumer education. Why not have manufacturers pre-clean and treat the bedding before it reaches the shelves? Some products are already designed to resist wrinkles, similar to non-iron shirts, making them more convenient for users. It would be beneficial if brands provided clear care instructions and even offered pre-treated options to make the experience easier for consumers.
