Shrimp Ridge Care Tips

Shrimp Ridge, scientifically known as *Calanthe*, is a genus of orchids commonly referred to as "Common Calanthe." With over 100 species, it's not as well-known as other orchid genera like *Cattleya* or *Dendrobium*. This is partly because its flowers are small and lack the vibrant colors that make other orchids stand out. However, what makes Shrimp Ridge unique is its delicate, shrimp-like appearance, which gives it an endearing charm. The plant thrives in warm, humid, and sunny conditions, though it can tolerate some cold. It doesn’t do well in drought or high temperatures, so it’s best kept cool during summer. The ideal growing medium is loose, fertile, and well-draining, such as humus-rich soil or peat moss. It's widely found across various regions in China and parts of Southeast Asia. In terms of appearance, Shrimp Ridge has short rhizomes with few large, basal leaves. The leaves are usually three in number, elongated and lance-shaped, measuring around 15–20 cm long. The flowers emerge from the base of the leaf stalks, forming a tubular structure at the base. The petals and sepals are light brown, while the lip is lavender, purple, or white, shaped like a fan with deep splits. The lip often appears curled, resembling a tiny shrimp tail. Native to regions including South Africa, Madagascar, China, Japan, and parts of Southeast Asia, Shrimp Ridge has more than 40 species in China, mainly found in the Yangtze River basin and southern provinces. These plants are divided into two main groups: evergreen varieties with small pseudobulbs and deciduous ones with larger, sometimes angular pseudobulbs. There are many cultivars of Shrimp Ridge, each with distinct features. For example, the "Yellowish White" variety is fragrant and grows in Sichuan and Hubei. The "Silver Band" type has yellow-green flowers and is found in Guangdong and Yunnan. Other popular types include the "Long-distance Shrimp Ridge," "Lan" (pure white), and "Medog Shrimp Ridge" (lavender). Cultivating Shrimp Ridge is similar to caring for *Guolan* (another orchid). It prefers indirect sunlight, around 70% shade, and well-draining soil mixed with humus. Watering should be moderate, especially in winter when the plant goes dormant. Fertilizing once a month during the growing season and reducing watering during flowering is recommended. Shrimp Ridge is sensitive to pests like cockroaches, so proper drainage is crucial, especially after heavy rains. In warmer months, it benefits from regular fertilization, but the concentration must be kept low. Repotting every 2–3 years helps maintain healthy growth. Compared to other orchids, most Shrimp Ridge varieties prefer strong light. In northern areas, they can be grown under forest shade, while in the Yangtze region, they thrive near tree edges. Evergreen types need slightly shaded environments, but even they can adapt to greenhouse conditions in winter. Overall, Shrimp Ridge is a charming and rewarding plant for orchid enthusiasts who appreciate subtlety and grace.
