How to Classify Hydraulic Oil? What Are the Specifications?

Hydraulic oil is a critical component in many industrial and mechanical systems, serving as a medium for power transmission, lubrication, and cooling. Proper classification and selection of hydraulic oil are essential to ensure the efficiency, longevity, and safety of hydraulic equipment. There are several ways to classify hydraulic oil, depending on its base material, performance characteristics, and application requirements.
1) Mineral-based hydraulic oils are the most commonly used type. They include seven main categories: L-HH oil (also known as machine oil), L-HL oil (general-purpose hydraulic oil for machine tools), L-HR oil (hydraulic oil with oxidation resistance), L-HM oil (anti-wear hydraulic oil for precision machine tools), L-HG oil (hydraulic guide oil or precision machine tool guide oil), L-HV oil (low-temperature or low-pour hydraulic oil, also called high viscosity index oil or thickened hydraulic oil), and L-HS oil (synthetic low-temperature hydraulic oil).
2) Fire-resistant hydraulic oils are designed for use in environments where flammability is a concern. These include L-HFA (oil-in-water emulsion, high-water-based hydraulic fluid), L-HFB (water-in-oil emulsion), L-HFC (water-ethylene glycol flame-retardant fluid), L-HFDR (phosphate ester-based flame-retardant fluid), and L-HEES (synthetic ester-based flame-retardant fluid).
3) Special-purpose hydraulic oils are tailored for specific applications, such as aviation hydraulic oil, fire-resistant aviation hydraulic oil, and hydraulic oil used in marine and military equipment.
In metallurgical production, most hydraulic systems operate under high pressure and flow rates, requiring high-precision control. Therefore, the performance of hydraulic oil must meet strict standards. Among these, L-HM anti-wear hydraulic oil is the most widely used due to its excellent wear protection properties. For fire-resistant applications, L-HFC water-ethylene glycol hydraulic fluid is typically preferred because of its superior fire resistance and stability under extreme conditions.
