New member of the clean energy family: power generation

In the search for clean electricity, the Finnish power company is shifting to green in a brownish way and turning its attention to a previously unexplored energy source: animal manure.

During the recent World Cup Equestrian Obstacle Qualifications held by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) at the Helsinki International Horse Show in Finland, 100 tons of excrement was packed into two large containers and transported by hand truck to the Yavinpa Power Plant for incineration.

According to Fortum, an energy company that launched the "Horsepower" project five years ago, the resulting 150 megawatts of electricity is enough to power the entire four-day exhibition, some of which will also be used to heat homes in the Finnish capital.

"There are so many horses in Finland, and of course there are more horses around the world, so if we can convert all the feces into energy, it will be amazing." Krista Hellgren of Fortum said. The company claims that the excrement produced by the two horses every day can provide a family with one year of heat, and the amount of 200 ml is enough to charge the mobile phone.

At the same time, another Finnish power company also called on the public to give them pet feces. Finland Vantaan Energia (Vantaan Energia) called on dog owners to "give a new life to the poo" through stickers and online events. As long as they are thrown into the trash, they will arrive at a huge garbage incineration plant with other garbage every day.

"It's not good to step on it. It's better to burn it as a fuel for electrical and thermal energy," said Kalle Patomeri, production director of Vantaa Energy.

Although there are 1,000 tons of household waste burned every day, dog feces is only a small part of it, but Patomeri said that dog feces help to produce efficient energy with limited emissions and remaining waste. In this way, Vantaa Energy hopes to achieve coal-free power generation within two years.

This practice of converting feces into energy was welcomed by dog trainer Marianne Meyer. She actively supports this approach. She said that there are 50 dogs on her client list, and the weekly "fat production" of her feces. If they are not used, these manure may be discarded on the forest floor or thrown into biomass waste.

"Someone finally took action on them, they will become energy." She was very happy about this. "Given that we need energy other than fossils, this will be a very positive direction of efforts." (Compiled by Ji Hongmei)
