A British scientist sent a special gift to the London Olympics - a tiny five-ring structure molecule called "Olympene", which is only about one in 100,000 in width, probably the smallest ever Olympic Ring.
Britain’s University of Warwick announced on the 28th that researchers at the university are working with international colleagues to use carbon atoms to form a hexagonal close-loop structure, placing three such rings on the other two rings. A molecular structure similar to the Olympic Five Rings was obtained and it was therefore named "Olympene."
After measuring, the width of an "Olympene" molecule is only about 1.2 nanometers, which is equivalent to one hundred thousandth of the thickness of human hair. It is probably the smallest ever Olympic Ring.
Dr. David Fox, of the University of Warwick, said that "Olympiad" does not only pay tribute to the Olympic Games, it also has practical scientific value. Its structure is similar to that of graphene, and it is unique in electrical and optical aspects.
